Department of Oral Biology

The department of Oral Biology faculty represents an multidisciplinary group of basic scientists and clinical researchers whose academic and research work focus on understanding the etiology and pathogenesis of oral malignancies, infectious diseases, and tooth regeneration. Faculty and students concentrate on biological principles of diseases that affect the oral cavity on both a clinical and molecular level. Faculty actively participate in didactic and clinical teaching and research in both the dental and medical schools.

At the department’s Center for Oral Infectious Diseases, researchers have explored such topics as to how bacteria drawn from the mouth can help battle cancer to how so-called “predatory bacteria” can fight drug resistant pathogens. Over the past twenty years, faculty researchers have consistently received millions of dollars in funding from the NIH, Department of Defense and industrial partners.
