Thursday Talks: Amey Patil ’16

For our faculty feature this Thursday, we talked with Amey Patil, assistant professor of restorative dentistry, and a Rutgers School of Dental Medicine (RSDM) alum.

Tell us about yourself and what you do at RSDM.

I’m a cosmetic dentist and board-certified orofacial pain specialist. I completed my Bachelor of Dental Surgery at Maharashtra University of Health Sciences in India. I worked as an associate dentist in Mumbai, treating many celebrities. My interest in cosmetic dentistry led me to pursue a fellowship in New York. Later, I earned a Master of Science in Dentistry in Orofacial Pain from RSDM in 2016. Along my dental journey, I have been honored with prestigious fellowships, including the International College of Dentists (ICD), American College of Dentists (ACD), Pierre Fauchard Academy (PFA), International Academy for Dental-Facial Esthetics (IADFE), American Academy of Orofacial Pain (AAOP). I also hold diplomate status with the American Board of Orofacial Pain (ABOP). Currently, I’m an assistant professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and the course director for general dental concepts at the Center for Temporomandibular Disorders and Orofacial Pain, in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences. My responsibilities include attending clinics, teaching courses in Restorative Dentistry with a focus on artificial intelligence, digital dentistry and cosmetic dentistry, and conducting research with postgraduate students in orofacial pain.

How do you blend cosmetic dentistry and orofacial pain?

My expertise in both cosmetic dentistry and orofacial pain allows me to consider the broader picture. I prioritize holistic patient care. I envision dentistry contributing to overall well-being, striving for patients to leave our clinic not only with improved smiles but also alleviated from pain, whether it originates from dental or non-dental sources. Ultimately, my goal is not just about creating beautiful smiles; it's about positively impacting lives and reshaping the perception of dentistry.

How long have you been here, and why did you decide to come to RSDM?

I have been a part of the RSDM family since 2014, starting as a student, then progressing to a researcher, and now as faculty. I chose Rutgers for its prestigious status and dedication to advancing dental education and research. The opportunity to collaborate with distinguished colleagues and contribute to innovative work at my alma mater solidified my decision. On top of that, my mom's passion for teaching, witnessed throughout my childhood, greatly influenced my career choice. So, the decision to be a part of RSDM aligned perfectly with my professional aspirations.

What do you like the most about RSDM?

I like RSDM's vibrant academic environment and its strong emphasis on innovation and research. The school fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, allowing me to explore and contribute to various aspects of dentistry. The commitment to excellence and the supportive community make it a dynamic and fulfilling place to work and grow professionally. Additionally, interacting with enthusiastic students and helping educate the next generation of dentists is both gratifying and rewarding.

What do you enjoy doing outside the school?

Beyond my academic pursuits, I love exploring different cultures and cuisines through travel with friends and family. I enjoy hiking, flying planes, playing cricket, volleyball, and golf. I also volunteer in leadership roles, including serving as the social media committee chair at ICD, marketing & communications committee chair for AAOP, and commissioner for the American Dental Association ’s continuing education recognition program.
